New Company Car Tax Rates Announced in 2020 Budget

Person working out company car tax rates after 2020 budget changes

Delivered on 11th March, the 2020 budget was dominated by measures to minimise the economic impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak warned MPs that there would be a “significant but temporary disruption” to the UK economy but insisted that “we will get through this together”.

Those measures included new company car tax rates for the coming financial year. Read on to find out more.

2020 company car tax rates

While many companies across the UK will have the coronavirus pandemic on their mind, the good news is that there is a confirmed reduction of most company tax rates by 2% in 2020/21 for cars registered from 6 April 2020. Fully electric vehicles will attract a new zero rate.

Rates will return to planned levels over the following two years, increasing by 1% in 2021/22 and 1% in 2022/23. Rates will then be frozen until 2024/25. This move will also include electric vehicles, which will increase by 1% year-on-year moving forward.

CO2 emission thresholds

Planned adjustments will be made to the CO2 emission thresholds for capital allowances on business cars by extending first-year allowances to zero-emission vehicles. The government aims to bring forward the phase-out of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by five years – moving it from 2040 to 2035. This is part of the wider policy on climate change to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions from the UK to net-zero by 2050.

This strategy also reduces the carbon dioxide emission thresholds, which are used to determine the rate of capital allowances available for company cars. To encourage the use of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), from April 2021, the government will extend first-year allowances to ZEVs only and apply the main rate writing down allowance (WDA) of 18% to cars with emissions up to 50g/km.

Champion Chases: Best Car Chases From the Movies

White bmw e46 under a sunny sky

There’s something about a good movie car chase that almost everyone loves. Whether it’s a love of cars, the danger of the action or the suspense of the chase, they really are a joy for the senses. Here are some of the best car chases from the movies.

Bullit

When director Peter Yates paired Steve McQueen with a 1968 Ford Mustang GT, he was probably sure of a good car chase scene. In fact, the scene is still considered the benchmark for cinematic car chases. The quality of driving, the sense of realism and the thought-out camera angles make this – we think – the greatest car chase in movie history.

Ronin

When the director of the movie is a former amateur racing driver, you know you’re in for something special. There are a number of great chases in this movie but the final one stands out above the rest. Shot in the streets of Paris, this chase involved 300 stunt drivers and some impressive driving with some cars reaching up to 120mph.

Baby Driver

Anybody who loves cars needs to see this movie – fact! We follow a young driver caught up in a criminal heist gang – specifically our protagonist offers the group (very) quick and (very) impressive getaways. The driving at some points in this film will leave you with your mouth open. You could pick any of the car chases in this movie but perhaps the opening one is the best. Between the blazing red Subaru, the ripping handbrake turns and daredevil escape routes you know that you’re in for a cinematic ride.

Wanted

This one is a bit of a guilty pleasure – it’s not particularly wholesome but it’s oh so tasty. From the moment that Angelina Jolie performs a 360-degree spin in a hot red Viper which simultaneously scoops up James McAvoy, you’re hooked. Jolie goes on to hang out the windscreen and shoot at the enemy whilst driving the car with her feet. Then just as we think the car chase is over (with a police road barrier looming ahead) she barrel-rolls over it, landing perfectly atop a passing bus before driving off into the night. Come on – that is a car chase and a half!

Bourne Supremacy

This one features the ever-entertaining hero escaping villain format! Matt Damon (a.k.a Jason Bourne) drives weaves through rows of traffic, performs incredible handbrake turns and pinballs off a number of cars in this car chase scene. In the end, Bourne decides to face his assailant – he maneuvers himself to face the villain’s car side-on and drive him into a pillar.

The drama of the stunts, the talent of the driving and the beauty of the cars make these some of the best car chases in movie history. Whilst we love them on the screen, we would definitely not recommend any off-screen recreations anytime soon!

Car Gadgets: The Top Five Car Accessories

Modern BMW car interior

Anybody that spends a lot of time behind the wheel will know that car gadgets can make your journey a whole lot better! Here are our top five car accessories.

Key Locator

Phone, wallet … and then you can’t find keys. Avoid running around like a headless chicken before you leave the house by getting yourself a key locator. This little gadget attaches to your keyring and is one of the handiest accessories you can possibly imagine. Simply call the locator from your phone and find your keys! Alternatively, you can press a button on your locator and it will call your phone!

Dashcam

It’s unfortunate, but there are a lot of reckless drivers out there. The best way to prove that you aren’t one of them is with a dashcam. This car accessory records you while you’re driving so you can prove to your insurance company that an accident wasn’t your fault. It also takes note of your GPS location and your speed, which can be used as information to lower your car insurance. Win-win.

Bluetooth Receiver

Everyone loves a good sing-song on a car journey. A Bluetooth receiver enables you to pair your device with your car so you can jam out to your favourite playlist! This tiny gadget accessory is perfect for cars that don’t have a built-in system and is great for when you’ve got backseat DJs that fancy putting on a few tunes of their own!

Jump Starter

Never hang about on the side of the road again with this gadget accessory! A jump starter is perfect for when your car battery has gone dead or your car is getting on a bit and needs some encouragement to get going! A jump starter does exactly what it says – it jump starts your car. However, it can also be used as a portable charger for your devices – yes, it’s that small!

Air Purifier

Forget the tree-shaped car fresheners that dangle off your rearview mirror and invest in a car air purifier instead. This gadget does one better than covering any odours in your car – it eliminates them. Here’s the science behind it: the purifier releases millions of negatively charged ions that stick to the particles of odour which are then collected on a plate inside the device. Say goodbye to any wet dog and lingering drive-thru smells!

From finding your keys to putting on your favourite road trip music, one thing’s for sure – these car accessories will make your next car journey a lot smoother!

Supercar: The five best magical cars in film and TV

White beetle from the film Herbie

These five magical cars are proof that sometimes the coolest cars are literally too good to be true. The heroes from these films and programs would all be lost without their trusty cars. Here are the five best magical cars from film and TV.

1. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has more going for it than an annoyingly catchy theme song. This car is renovated from an old famous racing car and somehow inherits magical abilities along the way. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’s abilities are so remarkable that even its inventor is unaware of them. This magic car can release wings to fly or transform into a speedboat if in aquatic-based danger.

2. KITT – Knight Rider

Far before talk of artificial intelligence was commonplace, KITT was helping David Hasselhoff solve crimes. This modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am was the perfect sidekick. KITT has too many super-features to list but put simply it was a fully self-aware being that could talk to Hasselhoff whilst providing indestructible destruction. What a combo.

3. Herbie – The Love Bug: Herbie Fully Loaded

Another ahead-of-its time vehicle is the tenacious and totally loveable Herbie. Another self-aware being that knew what it wanted, Herbie faced many challenges in their extensive six-film career as a serious auto racing contender. A true servant to motorsport and film alike.

4. The Flying Ford Anglia – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Whether you like Harry Potter or not, one thing’s for certain – the Flying Ford Anglia from this film is the coolest Ford Anglia ever made. This seemingly average Ford family car is transformed in this film into an invisible flying car which endlessly comes through for Harry and Co. Firstly, it gets Harry and Ron to Hogwarts, then it helps them survive an attack from a magical willow and finally comes to their rescue by saving them from being eaten by an army of enormous spiders. Not bad!

5. The Magic School Bus – The Magic School Bus

We’re sure that more than a few kids growing up in the early ‘90s would put the Magic School Bus on their Christmas wish list! This ordinary school bus could take you pretty much anywhere you wanted – famous locations from the TV series include outer space, the inside of the human body and the dinosaur age. Better than any school trips we can remember!

Whilst it’s always the heroes that get the credit, these five magical vehicles prove that they would nowhere without them. We’re sure that for a lot of petrol heads these cars were the beginning of their fascination with automobiles!

How To Come Up With Names For Your Car

couple sitting on car bonnet whilst coming up with names for your car

We don’t need to tell any petrol heads that it’s easy to have an emotional relationship with your car and part of this involves giving it a name. In fact, giving your car a name is more common than not with one survey finding that 8 out of 10 people do it. Without further ado, here are our top tips on how to come up with names for your car.

1. Consider your car’s personality

Obviously, the first thing you need to consider when naming your car is its personality. This might sound silly but there are actually lots of factors which affect this. Firstly, think about the way your car looks: if your car is small and sweet-looking (e.g. a Fiat 500) a name like Gary might not be suitable. It’s also fun to consider the make and model as part of drawing up a personality. An older model should have an older name and vice versa.

2. Your personality

Your personality makes a big difference when naming your car. If you have a louder personality, for example, you might want to pick an out-there name. You should also consider your major interests, for example, if you’re an avid fisher you might want to give your car a name like Marlin.

3. The license plate

The letters in the license plate can act as inspiration for the name you choose, it’s all about being creative with it. There are many ways you can make this work for you, here are a few examples:

  • BTY: This could be an inspiration for Betty, Betsy or Berty.
  • D4N: This could be an inspiration for Dan.
  • RG1: This could be an inspiration for Reggie or Reginald the 1st.

4. The colour

The colour of your car is one of the most obvious parts of your car and it can help to steer you in the right direction. Here are a few examples:

  • Black: Midnight, Black Beauty, Zorro, Storm
  • Red: Ferrari Fred, Scarlet, Ruby
  • Blue: Aqua, Baby, Sky
  • Grey: Onyx, Graham, Bullet
  • White: Ice, Jack/Jill Frost, Snowy

You use your car on a daily basis and it’s easy to get emotionally attached – very easy, believe us. If you’re looking to cement your relationship with your car, you might want to follow our steps above and give it a name!

That’s right, Ford takes first and second on our most sold models list in the UK. Despite this car being discontinued over 15 years ago, it dominated two decades worth of the automotive market – totting up an impressive number of sales in the process.

3. Vauxhall Astra – 2.8 million+ sold

This was by far the closest Ford ever got to any serious sales competition. The original Vauxhall Astra has been one of the best-selling cars in the UK since 1979. Its forty-year existence makes it one of the longest-living cars still in production.

4. Ford Cortina – 2.5 million+ sold

For a staggering nine-year run from 1972 to 1981, the Ford Cortina was the best-selling car in the country. In 1979, it broke a British record by making 193,000 sales and in its final year of production in 1982 it was second only to its sibling model, the Ford Escort.

5. Vauxhall Corsa – 1.82 million+ sold

This is the dream model for every boy racer that’s just passed their test. The Vauxhall Corsa has always been a popular car in the UK but experienced the height of its success from 2002 to 2005 where it was the best-selling supermini for all four years and in the top three best-selling cars overall.

6. Vauxhall Cavalier – 1.81 million+ sold

The Cavalier is a master of disguise. This family car has had many versions, facelifts and modifications including an estate and a sports coupe version. This automotive chameleon was one of the best-selling cars of the early eighties and was pipped to the top spot only by the Ford Cortina in 1984 and 1985.

7. Volkswagen Golf – 1.8 million+ sold

The Volkswagen Golf might not be the highest-selling hatchback on the market but it certainly holds claim to being the best. The Golf has received multiple international awards over twenty years for being an affordable car with great automotive technology – winning ‘World Car of the Year’ once and ‘European Car of the Year’ twice.

8. Ford Focus – 1.7 million+ sold

The Ford Focus had pretty big shoes to fill when it first came on the market, replacing one of the best-selling Ford models in the UK of all time (the Escort). It didn’t disappoint. The Ford Focus was a favourite amongst mums for its space and the Ford Focus ST was a favourite amongst boy racers for its speed.

9. The Mini – 1.58 million+ sold

Yes, of course, the Mini is on the list. This car has been an icon for the UK automotive industry for more than 50 years. Although it’s ninth on this list, the Mini often features on the top of the greatest British cars polls and is widely considered as one of the most influential models of all time.

10. Rover Metro – 1.49 million+ sold

Intended to be a follow-up from the classic Mini, the Rover Metro became a popular car in its own right: during its early years, it even outsold the almighty Ford Fiesta! Princess Diana also famously owned one before her engagement to Prince Charles – talk about British car royalty!

Road Rage UK: The UK’s Main Causes of Road Rage

lady holding head in frustration at road rage incident

At one point or another, you will have had some choice words or gestures with a fellow driver on the road. Despite this being a common aspect of modern-day driving, road rage has no official status or definition. It is seen simply as any aggressive or violent reaction to any disagreeable driving. But what do we find most disagreeable?

Road rage is a broad term which is caused by a wide number of irritating driving nuances. However, most of these can be boiled down to one or two actions which prompt an aggressive response. In a poll of over 18,000 drivers (conducted by the AA), these were the six things that topped the list of most frustrating driving habits:

  • Tailgating – 26%
  • Talking on a mobile phone – 25%
  • Hogging the middle lane – 23%
  • Lane drifting i.e. moving across several lanes at once – 10%
  • Overtaking on the inside – 7%
  • Driving too slowly/speeding/littering – 3%

Whilst some of these are actually illegal and others are just plain annoying, they all seem to prompt a road rage response from UK drivers. In fact, 78% of drivers have admitted that they have experienced some kind of road rage and more than half of those drivers stating that it’s a daily occurrence. It’s natural that with all this road rage going on across the country, there are some common phrases we share:

  • Go on then, move! – 72%
  • He’s not even looking! – 67%
  • Of course, it’s a BMW! – 64%
  • You’re welcome! – 58%
  • You could park a bus in there! – 41%
  • Are they actually blind?! – 28%

Yes, so maybe we’ve removed some expletives from the list but we’re sure that you’ll relate to some of these road rage rants all the same! It seems that we’re never short of words when another driver has annoyed us. Surprisingly, a considerable majority of us (66%) said that we were reluctant to use the horn which is designed for such occasions. So, instead of talking about it (or beeping our horns) what should we be doing about all the road rage out there?

There are a number of ways that we can bring more peace to our roads and motorways. Here are our top tips:

  • Plan your journey – The less likely you are to be in a rush, the less likely you are to get exasperated with delays or other drivers.
  • Apologise – If the incident is your fault, openly acknowledge that with an apologetic raised hand. This can diffuse the situation.
  • Ignore aggressive drivers – Avoid eye contact or interacting with a road enraged driver, it will only make things worse.
  • Stay in your vehicle – Under no circumstances should you exit your vehicle to talk with an enraged driver, this could take the situation from frustrating to dangerous very quickly.
  • Pull off the road – If you have been in a road rage incident, pull over and take the time to calm down before driving onwards.

It seems that as long as we have cars, we’ll have road rage. However, the next time you can feel your blood boiling over someone speeding, drifting or simply being downright stupid, take a second to remember that road rage isn’t worth it. The only thing that can come from it is even more bad driving.

Car Tech That Could Change the Way We Drive

electric car being recharged at charging point

Technology is constantly moving forward. Just consider what your phone can do now compared to ten years ago. However, it’s not just our phones that are capable of doing more. Today’s cars are near-unrecognisable from their automotive forefathers. Here are some car technologies that could change the way we drive (sooner than you think)!

More fuel-efficient cars

This technology is set to dominate the next stage of the automotive industry – the increasing number of hybrid and electric cars cropping up every day stand testament to this. As many international governments commit to green energy plans, we believe green car technology will (one day) become the norm. Expect to see petrol stations doubling up as electric charge stations in the next decade. Very sci-fi!

Self-driving cars

Autonomous cars are causing a lot of excitement in the automotive industry. A number of companies have invested large amounts of money into cars that can drive and park by themselves. In fact, there is already a wealth of semi-autonomous technology out there, with more and more cars featuring auto-braking sensors, adaptive cruise control and self-parking features.

Energy-storing body panels

Hybrid and electric cars are already set to become the norm of the automotive industry. Whilst this is probably a good thing, there is one slight hang-up that needs some ironing out. The batteries required to run a green energy vehicle add a significant amount of weight onto the vehicle. That’s where energy-storing body panels come in. The idea is that the panels would be able to store some of the energy from the batteries, powering the vehicle when it needs it most. Reducing weight and increasing energy efficiency. Win-win.

Predictive vehicle technology

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a pivotal part to play when it comes to the future of car technology – especially when it comes to predictive vehicle technology. Put simply, this technology will tell you what your car needs when it needs it. Forget dashboard lights that tell you about issues with your engine or when to top up your petrol, the whole of your car’s performance will be tracked and relayed to you via your smartphone or laptop. From the sensible to the sci-fi, there is no doubt that advancements in-car technology will change the way we drive. If you’re excited about the cars of tomorrow, but looking to finance a car for today – apply now or get in touch with our dedicated team of experts if you have any questions.
