Top 9 underrated cars under 10K

Honda Civic

Between petrol, insurance and general maintenance costs, running a car is expensive. To absorb these costs, many Brits are forced to trim their overall budget when it comes to shopping for a new set of wheels. The good news? With the best underrated cars under 10k, you don’t have to compromise on style or performance. £10,000 is a great budget when you’re shopping for second-hand vehicles and can score you some very tasty models.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly compact SUV, zippy hatchback or an executive saloon, you’ll be amazed at how far a £10,000 budget will stretch. There’s something for everyone on our roundup of the top underrated cars under 10k, so let’s get stuck in.

BMW 1 Series Mk2

Produced between 2011 and 2019, the BMW 1 Series Mk2 offers excellent value for money. The cabin feels spacious and high-end, with lots of tech features in the newer models. You’ll see both petrol and diesel engines on the second-hand market in a variety of different sizes. Responsive handling and sports-inspired performance make the BMW 1 Series Mk2 a fantastic choice for motorists with champagne taste on a beer budget.

Honda S2000

Looking for a smart little roadster with a dash of nostalgia? Scour the second-hand market and you’ll find a handful of pre-loved Honda S2000s. Sure, mileage may be high for listings in the £10,000 range. After all, production did stop in 2009, which means even the newest models are 14+ years old. But if the car has been well looked after and the owner can produce a detailed logbook, a Honda S2000 is one of the best underrated cars under 10k.

Citroen C3 Aircross Mk1

Fun and funky, the Citroen C3 Aircross Mk1 will get heads turning, especially if you snag one with a bold paintjob. This compact SUV is packed with clever features, including loads of storage for family road trips. Fuel efficiency is great for both the petrol and diesel engines – another big plus for families on a budget. The cabin doesn’t feel as luxurious as other compact SUVs on the market, but you can’t argue with the price. That said, if the previous owner splurged on a trim upgrade, you may be able to score luxe upholstery like leather or corduroy.

Honda Civic

First launched in 1972, the Honda Civic quickly emerged as a fan favourite in the UK. Compact and lively, the best-selling hatchback is just as at home in the city as it is on winding country lanes. Fun fact – when the model was first launched in the 1970s, it was accompanied by a “We’ll get you where you’re going” slogan. This still rings true today. If you’re looking for underrated cars under 10k that will get you where you’re going, the Honda Civic is a top pick.

Land Rover Discovery

You could easily spend £60,000+ on a used Land Rover Discovery. But if you’re willing to look past models released in the last few years and opt for something a little older, there are plenty of gems on the used car market.

In terms of space and off-road capabilities, it’s hard to beat the Land Rover Discovery. Yes, they do have a bit of a reputation when it comes to reliability. But if you’re confident in the maintenance department and have a good mechanic on hand, a second-hand Land Rover Discovery can be a great investment.

Skoda Yeti

Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005, the Skoda Yeti made waves in the small SUV market. It wasn’t long before Top Gear legend Jeremy Clarkson hailed it as the “best car in the world”. Practical yet cheeky, the model was an instant hit. If you’re looking for something that will transition from muddy roads to motorways with ease, the Skoda Yeti is one of the best underrated cars under 10k.

Jaguar XJR (X308)

Dreaming of getting behind the wheel of a Jag but don’t have tens of thousands of pounds to drop? Simply roll back the clock a few decades and consider a sleek Jaguar XJR (X308). These full-size luxury saloons were produced from 1997 to 2003 and make a statement with a boxy silhouette and retro aesthetic. Under the hood is a powerful V8 engine that holds its own against the latest showroom models.

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta has earned a loyal following with everyone from students to CEOs. Prices start at around £19,000, which means there are some serious steals to be had on the second-hand market. Brits can’t get enough of the model, so there’s plenty to choose from when it comes to colours, engines, specs and trim levels. Chances are, you’ll find a used Ford Fiesta for sale just down the road!

Renault Captur Mk1

Rolled out of the factory from 2013 to 2019, the Renault Captur Mk1 is a great pick if you’re looking for underrated cars under 10k. It’s marketed as a compact crossover SUV and offers plenty of space for growing families. Our advice is to look for a listing from 2017 onwards – the model was given a complete makeover in 2017 and emerged sleeker and more stylish.

What is the Honda Civic 2024 Model Like?

Black Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has always been a reliable family car. Safe, with low running costs and entirely affordable pricing, you’d forgive the Civic for either being on the less-than-handsome side of things, or for having an indifferent driving experience.

But the Honda Civic continues to rank amongst the best on the market, and the Honda Civic 2024 model looks equally set to impress.

What’s the most recent Honda Civic model?

2022 ushered in the all-new, completely redesigned Civic e:HEV. A fully hybrid vehicle, the 2022 Honda Civic was just one model in Honda’s suite of e:HEV vehicles. All of these vehicles promise elite performance, less fuel usage, and optimum efficiency when compared to mild hybrid and PHEV (plug-in hybrid) competitors.

Perhaps the biggest draw was the appeal of Honda’s e:HEV technology. This ensures that the car’s battery is recharged during normal usage and via a regenerative braking system. In practice, this means there’s no need for a mains electricity supply – the car never has to be plugged in to recharge. For consumers who have been skittish about making the switch to electric vehicles, Honda’s e:HEV technology has significant appeal, eliminating the need for the installation of a charging lead.

A 2023 Honda Civic was also released, which retained the full redesign of the 2022 model, with a few tweaks.

What’s the latest on the Honda Civic 2024 model?

Come 2024, Honda has promised to release a brand-new Civic model in the US, offered in both a sedan and hatchback body. The 2024 Honda Civic combines the very best qualities of the Civic suite – reliability, safety, affordability and a respectable drive experience – with Honda’s e:HEV hybrid technology, reaffirming the model’s enduring appeal.

So, what should we expect from the 2024 model?

Pricing

At the time of writing, the Honda Civic 2024 is planned for US release in late 2023. As such, pricings are only available in USD. The Civic will come in eight main variations, all of which have different pricings, depending on features and trimmings. These include a power sunroof, blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Expect the baseline 2024 Civic (the LX sedan) to be priced around $25,000, rising to $32,000 for the premium model (the Sport Touring hatchback).

Performance and drive

The baseline model comes with a standard 158 horsepower, 2-litre four-cylinder engine, which upgrades as you move through the models. The entry model isn’t for speed hounds, but offers perfectly respectable power – particularly given the car’s fuel efficiency.

The mid-range EX Civic wins out on fuel efficiency – with ratings of 33MPG for urban driving, 42MPG for motorway driving, and an average of 36MPG. It’s worth noting, however, that fuel economy stats for the hybrid vehicle haven’t been released yet.

Safety features

A highlight for the 2024 Honda Civic is the collision mitigation front function, which uses cameras and sensors to identify potential hazards and help the driver avoid collisions. Otherwise, the Civic boasts a range of driver-assistance features offered as standard, which include automatic emergency braking, lane-assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Infotainment and connectivity

A 7-inch infotainment panel with a 10.2-inch electronic dashboard display includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. This can be upgraded to a larger 9-inch panel. The Bose stereo provides impeccable audio quality, and there’s a wireless charging pad to charge your smartphone, too.

Interior and exterior

The interior of the 2024 model is modern and sleek, without too much busyness upfront. There’s plenty of space for both drivers and passengers alike, and helpful interior features like a driver footrest and automatic air conditioning add thoughtful touches to this compact car.

Externally, the 2024 Civic is handsome, enhanced by features including body-coloured front and rear bumpers, black side windows, a black grille, and front windshield trim. LED brake lights pair with automatic high beams, and helpful features like a fixed back window with inbuilt defroster provide weather protection.

Finding car finance for the Civic

At the time of writing, the Honda Civic 2024 has only been confirmed for US release in late 2023. That said, you can still use a car finance checker to gauge your eligibility for finance on the 2023 Honda Civic or other models in the Civic range. For more details, contact My Car Credit today.
